FINANCIAL LITERACY LECTURE SERIES: THE RISKS OF INVESTING

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Mr. Rey Montalbo is currently the Deputy Treasurer of First Metro Investment Corp (FMIC). He joined FMIC in January of 2006. He directly supervises and manages the company’s treasury operations by providing overall strategic directions on securities trading, liquidity and reserve management, distribution, product development, and investment portfolio management. He also directs the day-to-day operations of the Treasury Group on matters relating to securities trading, liquidity deployment, pricing and quotations for treasury products and investments. He presently manages a bond portfolio of more than P30 billion. Prior to that, Mr. Montalbo was Vice President for Trading and Distribution of JG Summit Capital Markets and Corp. from 2000-2005. He was responsible for developing products for distribution. This includes product conceptualization, market research, strategic planning, obtaining of appropriate regulatory permits, actual implementation, and performance monitoring. He also managed a portfolio of Asian equities, particularly in the Tokyo, Hong Kong, and South Korean Stock Exchanges.

From 1991-1999, he was an Assistant Vice President & Unit Head of Commercial Banking Unit, Treasury Distribution Division of Philippine National Bank. During his time at PNB, he managed the distribution of various treasury products such as spot and forward conversions, bonds, and currency swaps, among others, to the Middle Market clients of PNB through the Unit’s marketing desks in Makati (Head Office), Cebu, Davao, Baguio, Bacolod, Iloilo and Cavite EPZA. And from 1989-1991, he was an Assistant Manager in the Distribution Unit, Investment Banking Group of CITYTRUST BANKING CORPORATION. There, he handled the packaging, marketing and execution of debt-equity conversions and cross-country fund transfers.

Mr. Montalbo attained his Masters Degree in Business Management from the Asian Institute of Management in 1989 and his Bachelor of Science in Business Economics from the University of the Philippines in 1983.

COURSE OUTLINE

This course introduces investment options available to local investors. Discussions will be divided into the Debt and Equity Capital Markets. Investors will be guided to match the available options with their own investment objectives and in consideration of the risks involved. Furthermore, there will be an introduction of how financial institutions are organized so as to assist investors in their dealings with these institutions.
